Happy Halloween from The Cider Crate! 🎃👻 No Happy Halloween from The Cider Crate! 🎃👻

Nothing spooky about how good this cider tastes! Barreled aged and with a bit of pumpkin spice, this is the ultimate Halloween cider, that is all treat, no tricks.

Our friends at @coldcreekvineyards always knock it out of the park/graveyard with their releases, and this one is no different. Boozy at 10.6% ‼️ but balanced and smooth tasting still. The rich crisp apple base is oh so satisfying.

Their last day open for the season is tomorrow so last chance until 2026 to grab their goods!

One perry that will forever have a hold on our hea One perry that will forever have a hold on our hearts is the @twinpinesorchards Hammer Bent Perry 🍐💚

This is a very pear-forward, true to the fruit perry. Bright and juicy pears welcome you quickly and become more sharp as they go along. It’s off-dry but naturally sweet from the fruit. Smooth to consume and one of the more natural and authentic pear-tasting perries we’ve ever had, as well as the most crisp and clean of them all.

1L is a perfect size to split for 2-4 people (or one if you’re adventurous as it’s not hard to want a second pint, trust us 👀).

Then again, Twin Pines never disappoints us. One of our picks for some of the most traditional and authentic cidermakers you’ll have in Ontario - every offering is a knockout, and made with such a dedication and care.

She’s a (pink) lady 💝💁🏻‍♀️ Here She’s a (pink) lady 💝💁🏻‍♀️

Here we have the very unique Pink Lady single varietal by @caroliniaciderco. When we say there is a lot going on in this cider made with only one type of apples, we mean it 💖

It starts off tart and acidic, actually leading into a fresh, fleshy pineapple-like taste after a bolder carbonation presence makes itself known to your senses. Savoury floral and bitterness are unexpected flavours/aspects here too. While there are some earthy apple notes upfront, they don’t really define until the aftertaste.

The pineapple morphs into a general tropical flavour as it goes along, with the apple peel grit of the Pink Lady coming through at the end.

This cider lingers awhile, including some bitterness in the throat. It’s a very sensory cider from the variety of flavour notes that seems to touch on almost all tasting map regions of the tongue (like bitterness, sourness and sweetness), carbonic bite from the bubbles that can go up in the senses/nose and unique aromas.

A lot going on but don’t let that stop you from trying one of the most extraordinary ciders we’ve had this year. Pink Lady apples are one of the last harvested apple varieties each season, and we think that makes it develop into the many special and unique flavour expressions you can find in this cider!

The time has finally come - @1818farm_cidery has o The time has finally come - @1818farm_cidery has opened their doors this weekend to their estate taproom and restaurant in Carp, Ontario ✨

As a part of a media preview on Wednesday, we and others got to sample all the amazing things 1818 Farm & Cidery now has available for you to try.

We’ve been big fans of their cider since they started selling locally at Ottawa-area farmers markets last year. But seeing all they have to offer at their estate - wow. The Ottawa-scene definitely is getting a glow up and an elevation from their spot being on the map!

The beautiful evening was filled with samplers of their many ciders, and their food. They try to grow as much as they can on their farm, and keep everything as locally sourced as possible. The result? The food tastes super fresh and bright. Starting off with their bruschetta that had some russets in it, paired with their golden russet brandy barrel-aged cider, “Golden Hour”, we knew the night was going to be amazing. We later moved on to some of their estate grown salads and vegetables, then later into their amazing pizzas and pizza farm pockets. Everything was incredibly tasty, and since they are trying to make things as seasonal and as local as possible, the menu will be changing about every 2 weeks to match this. So you’ll always have a new experience every visit!

And of course, the ciders. We got to try their newest bottled release, Last Call Volume 3, this version featuring hibiscus and rose hips. We also got to sample their Pear Pressure tequila aged cider, that’s 75% apple, 25% pear. And it may be my new favourite from them - boozy, fruity and fun. It’s only on tap now, soon to be in bottles too.

The estate and farm is large, with their main building being crafted from a reclaimed post office. It’s spacious, modern and welcoming. You can buy their produce and ciders on the way out too!

Such a wonderful evening and a great cider destination, worth the trip to Ottawa alone for. We cannot wait to see all the magical eats and drinks to come from these lovely people ❤️❤️

It’s always a delight to have a bottle or two fr It’s always a delight to have a bottle or two from the Danforth Road collection from @lochmorciderco ✨

In their series that has largely been single varietals made with some serious cider apples, here we have their The Danforth Rd Blend - made with bittersharps and bittersweet’s , undetermined what the composure is.

Right off the top, you get a sharp acidity and some tannins, that aren’t too gripping but do alert you to the elevated cidermaking within. It’s a dry cider, but it’s very bright and crisp, and it has a hint of natural sweetness to it. We think it leans more bittersharp, but we do get some of the bittersweet’s in the finish, in particular. We also get undertones of vanilla and wood/oak - it says on the label it is partially barrel aged.

It’s pulpy, fleshy and a medley of so many apple characteristics, if you like extra crisp ciders that are somehow both refreshing and make you salvate for more in one sip, this will scratch your itch.

One of our favourite cider makers you should not b One of our favourite cider makers you should not be sleeping on are the good folks at @kawarthacountrywines ❤️ Nestled in the heart of the Kawarthas, this rustic country-side establishment is one of the best rural cider stops in all of Ontario!

They are both a cidery and a fruit winery, and the selection is just bonkers. Upwards of 50 different styles of products available at any given time, you won’t get bored here, trust us. We love their fruit wines (the small selection we’ve actually been able to try, again, so many styles) but of course, we come for the cider, always.

Named after their region, their Kawartha Cider is a super crisp and bright pulpy apple cider. Off dry, it’s got the perfect amount of sweetness in my opinion, far from sugary, but enough to add a great mouthfeel and vibrancy to it. The apples within taste fresh also - one could confuse this with a non-fermented cider at times they are so crisp and juicy. We also got some vanilla and Asian pear like notes within. So unique.

Super easy to drink, is smooth, creamy and really, one rare cider that I think would appeal to almost every cider fan.

We revisited their spot this summer, and it was absolutely packed for music and pizzas, beyond the drinks. You can tell that the locals really appreciate the authenticity and value this place provides to the community.

We also sampled their Buckhorn cider (also named for their local circumstances - the town they are in) and their Candied Pear which wow, you’ll never have a perry like this. All clean, bright, and easy going ciders that you can knock back a few pints, no problem.

Really, we are big fans of Kawartha County Wines and the people who run it are just the sweetest people you’ll meet also.

Worth a trip while in cottage country, or also on its own, only about 30 minutes north of Peterborough!

We’re here for a good time, not a long time. Wel We’re here for a good time, not a long time. Well that’s how we justified how quickly we drank this stunner!

As you can tell the @shaleridgeestatewinery Purple Rain is unlike most ciders out there. Made with purple butterfly pea flower, it tastes as dreamy as it looks. With peach, chamomile and lavender, one might fall asleep to these calming ingredients, but it’s so creamy and bright, it’s actually quite energizing to taste and look at 💜🦄

We recently revisited Shale Ridge and it has come along way since our first visit in 2020 when they were still building their main tasting and production space. Such a beautiful estate with lots of seating outside and inside - including their famous swing seat tables!

And they aren’t even done - their Nordic spa and hotel space are currently under construction to be opening in the near future we are told. That’s definitely a first for Ontario cideries!

While there, we had probably the best charcuterie board we’ve ever had, loaded with rich cheeses and soft, pillowy bread. I still crave this frequently. And we got a flight of their ciders, which are all fun and easy going choices. They also have lovely wines, including a froze - frozen rosé wine - that was a delight. Other food and non-alcoholic options too!

This is most definitely a great destination in Western Ontario we recommend you visit. And get the Purple Rain - trust us 🥰

It’s national dog day but every day you can find It’s national dog day but every day you can find us hanging out with our two corgis @thecidercorgis and drinking cider! They love to explore cideries with us and we are thrilled that most cideries are dog friendly ❤️

Here we have featured beside our super handsome 8 year old Sterling, is the @heemanscellar Barrel Aged Pear - made with Williams pears and aged in whisky barrels. It definitely has that flavour and profile but isn’t dominated by the spirit – it adds nuance, complexity and a bit of vanilla even too, but isn’t too strong.

With some mild astringency, it’s more defined by the semi-sweet pear and wood/oak notes that appear throughout. Pear base is thick, syrupy and juice-forward. It becomes smoother as it goes on and has a clean finish. Ice changes the profile a lot so we do not recommend drinking this on it.

One of Heeman’s more unique options, I think it would appeal to most perry and cider drinkers as it’s balanced and no element is too bold or too lacking. But then again, everything Heeman’s has been doing lately has been stellar ☺️

When talking about sentimental ciders, I could nev When talking about sentimental ciders, I could never leave out a truly beloved cider and its makers - the Cuvée Madeleine vintages by our friends @coldcreekvineyards ❤️

I remember it was love at first sip, tasting it in the summer of 2020 - their first release, the 2019 vintage of it. It was such a high quality, European inspired cider, really one of the first in Ontario to so accurately import the tastes from the European traditional methods, it blew us away.

So of course, drinking our 2024 bottle, it still holds a lot of meaning to us. A little drier than previous versions, it still has that crisp apple base loaded with layers of complexity. We also found this year’s version had a lot of powdery yeasty fruity esters to it - a really unique expression new to this year’s bottle. Always however, that golden apple brilliance, with a firm tannin and acidity to tickle the senses.

It brings back memories and times of rustic places we have not yet been. But it’s a little trip in a bottle, every year 🥂

Clocking in at an 8hours and 10 minutes drive from Clocking in at an 8hours and 10 minutes drive from home (2nd furthest in Ontario for us to drive to from Ottawa - hello #1 Thomson Farms in Sault St. Marie), we finally made it to the other side of the province to Windsor this year.

And on our journey, we stopped into @walkervillebrewery that makes excellent beers and also ciders! A year round choice is their Argyle Apple Cider (named after the street the Brewery is found on), but they also make seasonal flavours throughout the year.

When we visited, they had their Strawberry Lime cider - a perfect choice for summer. It’s actually such a light and breezy choice, a bit too easy to knock back in the sunshine on the patio.

The strawberries are creamy and plump - being a very balanced profile of their own. What was surprising was the lime - it wasn’t tart or tangy like most ciders you’ll find them in - it was definitely a lime flavour but a bit soft and smooth, maybe even a bit creamy too. Very unique! With both of these fruits working in harmony with the crisp, off-dry apple base, it’s a great fruited cider overall.

The brewery is huge and has lots of events - they had music trivia when we stopped in. And the parmesan pretzel, oozing with garlic and butter, was the best we’ve ever had, hands down.

So if you find yourself downtown Windsor, this is a must stop for all beer and cider fans! We hope to be back one day ❤️

If there is one unique cider adventure we’d reco If there is one unique cider adventure we’d recommend to all the cider buffs out there, it would be @coronation_hall_cider_mills nestled on the Québec side of the Ottawa Valley/Outaouasis in the traditionally Anglo community of Bristol.

This is like stepping into a well preserved time capsule of local lore. Originating in 1937 to the coronation year of King George VI (hence the name), it has always been a spot where the locals gathered for events. In particular, where the young people would come to dance and find legal loopholes for their at the time dry town.

With its later abandonment and impending demolishment, came an opportunity - restore and find a new purpose. Owner Graham decided to do just that, and add in a rustic cider mill inspired by the historical venues found in New England.

Since 2008, they have grown apples and made cider, as well as offering the hall as a community venue for plays, weddings and much more. It is filled to the brim with history and artifacts. We won’t say much more as to encourage you to go and find out yourself! But you can watch the episode of @stillstandingtv that featured Coronation Hall - S5E10 - on CBC Gem to learn more.

The cider they make is also a very traditional, rustic choice. When we visited, they had their original Crackling Cider, and they also had a hopped Thomas Graham cider that was particularly resinous (so IPA fans, you’d love this one). Both drier but brighter ciders, they taste made with care and a consideration of the Quebec and New England styles, culture and histories they are inspired by. We are told a 3rd new variety is coming this fall, so we may be back 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you want to visit, it’s about 90 minutes from Ottawa, but the scenic drive through the Gatineau hills makes it fly by. @aventure_outaouais also offers 2 tours there - one with 2 winery visits, and also they have a haunted tour that is 1/4 stops - as part of the allure and history at Coronation Hall are ghost stories too.

If you love cider history and culture, this is most definitely a spot for you. It’s unlike any other cidery we are aware of in Canada!

One stop in the Georgian Bay Area for all cider fa One stop in the Georgian Bay Area for all cider fans to make is to @greyandgoldcider - nestled in the Blue Mountains 🏔️🗻

Focusing on wild ferments and unique, nature-based adjuncts, you really feel a kinship to the land the cider is made from visiting here.

Come with an open mind and leave with handfuls of fun ciders. Including their Northern Gold - an acidity driven, sour heritage varietal blend, that really does shine this bright visually and taste wise.

With a beautiful tasting patio, and ciders made with ingredients like spruce, fennel and wildflowers, Grey & Gold is welcome to everyone, but we feel it is especially for the cider aficionados and the nature lovers 🌲

Thanks for having us again! ❤️

What an absolutely brilliant sour cherry + blueberry infused cider from Spy. A rich, dark sour cherry burst of flavour greets you quickly, that has some natural spice-like notes to it. It becomes more blueberry focused as it goes on however, with a crisp, bright apple base throughout that balances out the experience. Leans dry, but does have some natural fruit sweetness to it. It basically is fruit punch cider overall!

We visited Spy in July, and it is one of the shining lights of the Georgian Bay region. With a beautiful estate, there is ample and unique sitting room outside around the main building - where they frequently have music artists and various festivals as well.

They also recently started serving wonderful street foods like fries, pizzas and pretzels. We tried a good half of their food offerings, and they were nothing short of tasty, memorable and filling choices.

And if you’re in the mood for something stronger, they are also a distillery with lots of liquors available to try there or to take home - including apple based ones.

My recommendation? Get here before the summer ends. It’s well worth the journey and to stay for a few hours, you won’t be bored!!

Summer lives on forever in the Watermelon Cider by Summer lives on forever in the Watermelon Cider by @theperthfarmhouse 🍉 ☀️

This is the most accurate watermelon cider we’ve ever had. Juicy, crisp, a bit candied but still natural tasting. And yet, it’s not too sweet. It’s like they squished a melon and some apples right into the can 🤷🏻‍♀️

We recently visited their estate in New Hamburg and it’s picture perfect. It’s a beautiful, rustic, road side winery & cidery just 25 minutes from Kitchener. Focusing on bright and breezy drinks, you can sample solo, in a flight and you can complete your experience with some light bites - like the grazing box pictured here.

They also have a wonderful goat experience, where you can go pet some young and old goats in their enclosed area with a goat nanny. They are super sweet and tender animals and it’s totally worth the trip just for them!

We enjoyed all 4 of their available ciders - all bright, perfectly sweetened and mostly, just fun and easy going. The food was great. The goats were adorable. And the staff are lovely. A perfect summer excursion if you ask us ❤️

One of the most clever cider names we’ve seen in awhile comes from the good folks at @1818farm_cidery with their Hailing a Cab cider. It’s a cider macerated on Cabernet Franc pomace from @kin_vineyards and aged in Cabernet wine barrels. The name is as good as the cider within.

Now this is what I’m talking about for a cider-wine fusion drink. It’s 7% but it’s lighter body and intensity actual give us piquette vibes. It opens with a plump red grape note, but as it goes on, it tastes a bit more wine-like. Their dry apple cider is a bit tart, a bit acidic but tastes mature and crisp. Easy drinking - especially for the hot summer we’ve had!

If you’re like me, I typically don’t drink red wines. But the perfect harmony and blending of these worlds, is nothing short of dreamy - I would reach for this any day, but especially for a meal pairing.

The portfolio of ciders 1818 has out currently is really stunning and we think they are really helping in making the Ottawa region a prime cider destination. They are currently finishing up the building on their new taproom and restaurant estate - we cannot wait to visit very soon 🥰

With one of the more interestingly named ciders we With one of the more interestingly named ciders we’ve tried recently, it was great to try and pick up @coffinridge Brush with Death Maple Rosemary Cider on our recent trip to Georgian Bay!

We’ve had a version of this cider on tap before, but now they sell it in cans at their retail store with a new name. As with the branding of their estate, this one isn’t for the faint hearted - it’s bold and unapologetic!

Loaded with a caramelized, rich maple syrup, it’s the most dominate flavour from start to finish - it’s like drinking a liquified maple candy, if we are being real here. However, where it gets intriguing is the addition of rosemary. It adds a savoury, heavy note that is a great characteristic on its own, but it also seemingly enhances the maple and apple notes within. The apple base is crisp and rich also - it acts as a great canvas for the adjuncts added. And based on the can, it is inspired by the Tom Thomson painting, “Canoe Lake”, who according to the description was a semi-local hero.

Now, their estate in Annan is arguably one of the most beautiful in all of Ontario. On a rolling hillside spot overlooking the Bay, the layers of grass, vineyards and land just keep coming until a shimmering royal blue waterbody emerges in the horizon. You can get lost in the views and you’ll want to stay all day to enjoy.

We got their focaccia platter with 3 types of flavoured butter and oils. Truly a spectacular accompaniment to the ciders we we had. We also tried their lavender earl grey pear cider and sampled their Hawaiian pineapple + coconut cider, which is great for fans of coconut (not for me, but Barry liked it!)

Their estate is stunning and does have a bit of a sinister theme - check out the bathrooms for this morbid effect in full theme! Worthy of an excursion that way any day and we will recommend it, til death do us part! ☠️

If only we could hold on to that golden hour glow If only we could hold on to that golden hour glow for longer ✨☀️

Recently, we finally got to visit the Windsor-Essex and see and taste a really influential cidermaker in Ontario - @caroliniaciderco for the first time. Cidermaker Janelle was one of the first pommeliers in all of Canada, and she actively supports other cidermakers in the province in many ways, all while crafting her own excellent offerings.

One such great cider is her 2023 Dabinett single varietal. As you can probably tell from the haze (and glow) it’s unfiltered and truly stunning to look at.

This cider highlights the simplicity of this semi-tannic, slightly tart and tangy apple variety. Peel and grit + some apple earthiness, it holds some minerality and yeast esters upfront- that as a bit of a tropical, fruity presence- is where most of the profile is.

The aftertaste is pretty clean and doesn’t vary greatly from the start. It’s not too complex, and has a decently static flavour journey from start to finish, but it showcases the authenticity of the dabinett very well. An argument for the simple making the best experience.

This is one cidery and cidermaker we highly recommend checking out because they are and will continue to do big things for the province’s cider industry 🥰. Can’t wait to drink the rest of her portfolio we have here too!
