If you asked us who we thought was making some of If you asked us who we thought was making some of the best cider in all of Canada, where would your mind drift to first? You may have not answered rural Manitoba, but about 2 hours from Winnipeg, you’ll find @woodengatecider who is elevating the entire cider scene with masterful ferments and blends. One such cider we immensely enjoyed was their Hidden Rose. When Barry, the ED of @cidercidreca said it’s one of the best ciders he’s ever had, you’ve got to take that seriously. Presumably a red peel or red flesh ferment, this rosé cider tastes as beautiful as the hue is. You get a great driving acidity upfront, with then a really unique brown sugar like note coming through pretty quickly. With bright and semi-tart apples, the apples then almost melt into a creamy taste consistency, all while remaining bright and clean throughout. Beautiful red varietal notes define this, with we assuming some of them being crab varietals because of the tannin and complexity. With us also getting candied watermelon, strawberry and floral notes to round out the experience as well. An absolutely stunning cider. And good thing they ship Canada-wide also, if you want to experience this and their amazing portfolio of ciders. Last week we were in Calgary, judging our second y Last week we were in Calgary, judging our second year at the @canadabeercup, so we had to stop into one of our favourite local spots - Inglewood’s @cold_garden. It’s a very funky, progressive spot where all are included and welcomed. They have one of our favourite modern ciders only available on tap - their Scrapple Dry Cider. A very rustic, hazy cider, it’s bursting with crisp apple character, with a clean fermentation to give you the right amount of satisfying alcohol and notes within. It almost tastes like freshly pressed juice, but it is 6.4%, so comfortably an alcoholic choice. You could certainly spend hours here looking at all the unique decor on the walls and ceiling. And the ample drink menu definitely encourages that. I particularly like their vanilla-infused Marzen called Cakeface for the beers. They also have a super juicy, Peach Bellini cider slushie on tap that beats the heat. 🍑🍎 While it’s definitely a brewery first, it’s a must visit for lovers of hazy ciders, unique taprooms and fun afternoons where everyone can be themselves. And disco decors are unlike anything else we’ve seen. We are in the middle of a trade war, so we haven’t We are in the middle of a trade war, so we haven’t posted any ciders from south of the border since February 2025. But this one is straight out of Compton (Quebec) 👍 Seemingly a 2022 vintage, the Kentucky by @cidrerie.compton is the closest you’ll have to anything Kentucky bourbon tasting here in the true north currently. At 8%, they certainly let the bourbon speak volumes. Right out of the gates, you get a big punch of boozy, spirit goodness, including some warming in the mouth from it. It later lets the nuanced bourbon notes shine as it develops - vanilla, caramel and oak are primary. And they also included some serious cider apples within - Porter’s Prefection, Dabinett, Yarlington Mill, only to name a few. Their complexity and tannin build and defines as the journey goes on. Bone dry. Sour. Rich. Everything you’d expect from Ciderie Compton and more. It’s always a treat to get to try fruited ciders t It’s always a treat to get to try fruited ciders that use uncommonly found flavours. Enter @yipcider Kiwi Cider. I can’t recall in the 2000+ ciders we’ve tried now, ever having a kiwi flavour in a cider. Maybe it’s a difficult fruit to work with, maybe it’s expensive. But whatever New Brunswick’s Yip did to this magical cider, I’m in awe 🫡 It opens with a bright, juicy, sweet kiwi that is authentic, tangy and just plain fun. It then moves into a crisp, tangy apple blend, that really is clean and faultless. It’s a bit of a sweeter cider, but it has out seal of approval for being so juicy, flavourful and well executed. It does lean more kiwi actually, maybe about a 60/40% balance. But it’s reassuring you’re getting a lot of the promised titular fruit, they do not skimp out at all. And guess what! When everyone is doing a hopped cider, newer cider maker from British Columbia @hardcorecider is doing it different and better if you ask me 🤷🏻‍♀️ Straight from the Okanagan, Hard Core Cider Co is taking your standard styles and elevating and remixing them into extra unique experiences. The two we’ve tried really stand out in a crowded field of entries. Their best seller, the Unhazy Hopped definitely deserves the praise. It leans into many brilliant hops notes without being polarizing, while adding their own twist. It’s actually a decent sour cider, which is different for the style but also super tantalizing. Stating with some semi/crunchy hops, you get a lot of those sharp notes like citrus and stone fruits, as well as a touch of bitterness and resin. It then expands its profile to feature many apple characteristics, including green apple-like notes, as well as a crisp apple base really showcased throughout. It’s a long lingering cider, with the apple crispness and sourness building as it goes. And then out of nowhere, a unique element - an added adjunct, Apricot -, comes through. A semi-juicy, stone fruit flavour really shines into the finish, along with a touch of pleasant minerality. This is a well executed hopped cider in a field of varying experiences for the style. It would formally appeal to the craft beer fans due to the higher hopped notes, but not alienating your more traditional flavoured cider fans. We look forward to see what other ciders they offer. Because @1818farm_cidery used it all for their truly stellar release, Nowhere to Rhum 👊 One of the absolute best Ontario ciders of the year, is this a 9% barrel-aged banger. Made with hyslop crab apples, it’s then aged in rum barrels for 5 months. The result is rich and layered cider that does not mess around on the promised rum flavour. We get some gold and darker rum notes within, and while bold, the spirit notes and astringency aren’t too hot or overpowering. Just a tropical and complex rum infusion that will certainly take the edge off 😘 The hyslop base is tart and tannic as it should be for being a crab apple, with a touch of funk also. But it’s still smooth… we’ve had some pretty puckering crab apple ciders before, but this is more sessionable than those. Overall, a dry cider that lingers awhile, that is deeply satisfying. All of 1818’s cider releases for this year are worthy of a trip to Ottawa. Happy Canada Day 🇨🇦 Well the weather did not coop Happy Canada Day 🇨🇦 Well the weather did not cooperate with us at all here in Ottawa today. Flash flooding. Winds and maybe tornados. Torrential downpour and thunderstorms. It definitely canceled a lot of parties in the city. It killed our evening plans. But we move forward. And we do so with good cider. We got this Geneva by @cidrerieterre50 on our trip to Quebec City last November at a local bottle shop. We also got the pleasure to meet them and try more of their portfolio this past weekend at @soifdecidre. Well the year is only half way through officially today, but this is easily in the running for one of our best ciders of the year. It opens with your typical Geneva crab apple notes - tannins, acidity and sourness. But then like a storm breaking, a bright sunshine of creamy strawberry and pink florals emerge. And they stay and dance with the tannins and tartness. It’s a delicate tug of war between these elements that somehow keeps the balance. If there was ever a “user-friendly” crab apple cider, this is it. It’s very sessionable and easy to drink but it doesn’t compromise on the key elements of what makes a Geneva so. I always imagined Normandy to be picturesque, but I always imagined Normandy to be picturesque, but the first stop on our trip to @manoirdegrandouet really exceeded all expectations. Tucked in the countryside, in the Route De Cidre anchor town of Cambremer, this idyllic cidery really set the mood for our 4 days in the region and took us away to another world ❤️ This cidery came highly recommended for the ciders and the landscape and we see why. While we really liked all the ciders and calvados tried, what really stood out was their 2018 Grandval Signature. Aged for 6 years in the bottle, after an initial barreling and secondary aging in the bottle, the result was perfection. Rich, caramelized, layered, but still very easy to sip. A good sparkle added a bit of elegance to the experience as well. Overall, it was an expert blend of many apple characteristics really that drove the journey throughout. And the Calvados was next level too - tasting the 2, 5 and 10 year blends, all were amazing but we actually found the 5 year to the perfect goldilocks of them all. Could not recommend this place enough should you (and you should) make it to the Normandy Cider Route ❤️🇫🇷

Pic 1 - @applebanditnl - a Dutch commercially-focused cider. Somersby-esque made by @heineken Pic 2 & 3 - @depraelamsterdam for excellent craft beers made onsite + an imported sweeter Irish cider on the menu from @stonewellcider Pic 4 - visiting the iconic @wynand_fockink to try the pride of the Netherlands, Jenever, a juniper liquor that was a precursor to gin Pic 5 - @brand_bier - a super crisp and refreshing ale Pics 6-8 - we did a VIP tour at the @heinekenexperience, which had a visit to their secret bar with many tastings Pics 9-10 - we toured the @bols.cocktailexperience that did a deep dive into the history of Jenever, and finished with a 2 cocktail-making class Pic 11 - a stop into the Aepjen bar, that has been there since the 15th century, where sailors use to trade monkeys for beer, hence the monkey theme And a few other fun photos from touring Amsterdam and the countryside. Love this place and the people. A highly recommended stop on your next Euro-trip 🇳🇱
We recently visited Amsterdam, and while beer is l We recently visited Amsterdam, and while beer is largely king in The Netherlands, we did find a couple of domestic ciders at @indewildeman in the core! @elegast_cidery in Utretch, makes a 6.5% fantastic Plum Cider. Now this one isn’t messing around 👀 we thought it made our local Revel Cider look tame!! Funky, puckering sour and acidic, it’s a strong one, but fortunately that’s a kink of ours 😘 We also tried the @blakstoc cider on the menu too, which was very delicious, but upon research, it was actually from Austria! But it was very rich and caramelized, did not matter, we loved it. And to round out our experience at our now favourite Dutch bar, we had a Quad and a Triple from local beer makers. It just hits different here. The menu was actually insane though, with over 100+ beer and spirit choices, with the cider menu being pretty strong too. Judging last September was an amazing experience, where I also passed my tasting exam and was certified as a Cider Judge with the @bjcp_official program. I evaluated over 70 unique ciders, along with Best in Show for adjunct categories. If you’re a cider maker who is looking to enter the competition, you have until June 30th to submit your intent. Excited to be judging with my cider team from last year again… Barry @cidercidreca and @bouche_bag who is also running a Certified Pommelier Sensory Training workshop on Sunday, August 30th before the festivities begin! Getting cozy with this super warming cider tonight Getting cozy with this super warming cider tonight ❤️ First time trying Alberta’s @prairiebearsciderco and here we have their Chai Cider. We expected it to be good, but this absolutely stunned us with how delicious it is. We aren’t sure of all the ingredients other than the spices listed on the bottle, but it has a very strong orange flavour from start to finish. We also got some earthy, gritty black tea that brings it back to the chai aspect of it. The spicing starts off bold and savoury, with the clove and allspice coming in strong. It then moves into a smoothing cinnamon-focused presence towards the finish. Of course, with a pulpy, crisp and juicy apple base, all of its elements are so nicely rounded and in sync with one another. Warming. Comforting. Very good for all seasons really, but in this extended snow, it just feels right.

A funky, sour take on a tannic, sharp apple, dry traditional cider. As per the label, it’s made with russets and spy. We are always down for a good Grey & Gold wild ferment. And they will be at the @cidersaloncanada next week at @heemanscellar!! Can’t wait to see what they bring.

It’s Saturday so let’s start the party and keep go It’s Saturday so let’s start the party and keep going on until last call 🎉🪩🕺🏻 Last Call Volume 3 by @1818farm_cidery is a unique cider…. a hibiscus and rose-infused cider aged for a good amount of time in older barrels. It’s tart. It’s floral. It’s elevated. I’d actually say it would be a grand choice for both natural wine and sour beer fans. The apple isn’t overly juicy or crisp, but it’s sharp, smooth and it sustains the whole way. The hibiscus and rose do make it floral, a bit savoury and botanical, but not perfume-like, thankfully. This is a great follow up to their volume 2 Last Call that was made with raspberries. They had a volume 1 also as one of their first ciders made with cherry we are told! And if you’re wondering, now how did I get a photo on a DJ Mixer? Well, I’m not only married to the ED for Cider Canada, he has been a DJ for over 25 years as well 💋

I’m 1000% done with winter now, especially after y I’m 1000% done with winter now, especially after yesterday’s ice storm, but I do love me some ice ciders so might as well drink some from my collection while we wait for spring 🤷🏻‍♀️ One interesting ice cider is the @spirittreecider Estate Reserve. While no doubt caramelized and sweet as one would expect for an ice cider, it has a natural orchard earthiness to it also. It gets drier as it goes along as well. Some acidity. Some bitterness. It’s got a lot going on! Unsure of the sugar content, but it perhaps could be a few grams less per litre than other standard offerings. Thank you for the nomination and those who voted for it 🥺 What started as a way to address a lack of information on Ontario ciders when I started to get into them back in 2015, it has grown into this beautiful community of friends and industry partners, for which I love engaging with every day. I appreciate every cidery we get to visit and drink, and every single follower to this page ❤️ I always try to make this page as approachable and welcoming as possible as cider is for everyone. My mission is to showcase the incredible ciders from all across Canada and the positive community that surrounds us all. And maybe help you find amazing products you wouldn’t have found out about otherwise 🍁❤️. And just a note about the my friend and runner up Jenna @bouche_bag. You will not meet a kinder soul than her. She is patient, engaging and works so, so hard at her craft and supporting the industry overall. Personally I would have voted for her over me as she’s just the coolest and best, and I have learned so much from her, including judging together at the 2025 Canada Beer Cup cider categories.
