A naturally more sweet apple, this shows in the cider but is far from sugary or cloying. Made with estate Galas, this is a super crisp and easy to drink cider. It’s crisp, bright and with a clean, fault free body. It also features some unique notes like starfruit and other tropical-like notes. Some of the best Canadian ciders you could find in Chicago last week: 🍎 @banjocider. The strawberry rhubarb Wildflower made with maple syrup was an absolute hit with everyone 🍎 @twoblokescider all of theirs of course! 🍎 @woodfolkcider brought many of their ciders, Little Twig being a personal favourite of mine 🍎 @redislandcider brought some of their flavoured cans. Their Haskap Lady’s Slipper was a masterclass on local PEI flavours 🍎 @islandfolkcider brought a few, including their latest Chocolate Strawberry made for Valentines 🍎 @crossmountcidercompany brought maybe their entire portfolio to sample?! Amazing! 🍎 @yorkcountycider from Fredericton became a cult favourite with their 2L bottles of flavoured goodness, including their 9% imperial cherry 🍎 other bottles from @greyandgoldcider, @heemanscellar and @drinkannapolis also made their way through the tasting events Always incredible to see Canadian Cider from coast to coast to coast be loved and appreciated. Rounding out our Top 5 best and most influential c Rounding out our Top 5 best and most influential ciders from the last 10 years should be an obvious choice to anybody who has followed our page in the last 5 years. This cider and this maker means a lot to us here at The Cider Crate and the impact they have had on us has been truly transformational to our page and love of Ontario cider. Cold Creek opened their doors in the early days of the pandemic, summer of 2020. Right from the start, we knew they would be different. And oh were we right on that one. Their first cider, the Cuvée Madeline, was an unparalleled beauty in the province and a stunning primary offering on its own. The inspiration for cuvée draws on Irish and Brittany, France cider making traditions and it shows. You get a lively carbonation that is quite effervescent to the palate. Quickly you get a complex, layered caramelized and baked apple base that is a rich experience for the senses. A driving acidity and semi-gripping tannins add mouthfeel. Some natural sugars tease and brighten the tastebuds. You can taste the barreling room their ciders are aged in, with balanced cellaring notes within. The 2019 Cuvée Madeline was their first vintage, but not their last - it has made a repeat appearance every year since. While every year has its unique characteristics, the essence and body of this cider remains consistent. Drawing from rudimentary practices and a nostalgia for old world cider making, they also fuse the modern spirit of Prince Edward County into their craft. This is one of the most sophisticated and romantic ciders we’ve encountered in Ontario. And owners Chris and Sylvia are some of the most welcoming people you will ever meet - you become apart of their story once you walk through their tasting room doors. This cider really upped what good and traditionally-based cider making can be in Ontario for us. And every other cider style they’ve crafted since, you can see the quality and homage to other old world cider making styles in them too. The Cuvée Madeline changed the narrative for us. The Spirit of the Woods by @revelcider has a special place in my history of cider, not just because its from my hometown of Guelph, Ontario, but also it was the first offering to make me really say “wow that’s unique”. Tariq, the founder and owner of Revel Cider setup shop in Guelph in 2016, and was one of the first places we took a tour of. Seeing his space grow from a plan to a power house of a producer, to now adding in a gorgeous taproom to showcase their product has been fantastic and quite the ride. That product has found itself all over the world, as he has create a cult following of types. You can see a few of our tours with photo’s and interviews on our www.thecidercrate.com account and podcast. Spirit of the Woods was one of the first in the 100+ offerings that we have sampled, and remains at the top of my personal list because of its one of a kind unique sensation found from the gin - a bountiful flavour of botanicals and deep and intense apple base. It almost feels like it is chilled, even at room temperature. This is often the “go to” when asked what my favourite cider is, which of course, like pets it’s hard to choose. This cider was everywhere for a few years and it really broke some barriers in Ontario on how experimental you can be with cider as your base. It won tons of awards. It was one of the ciders to really break through to many bars and lead the charge for the cider revolution from 2015 on in Ontario. We don’t think Revel has released this one in a few years now, seeing we last had it in 2021, but consider this post our petition to bring it back. Sometimes you only need one apple variety to make Sometimes you only need one apple variety to make a masterpiece. The simple can become complex. A canvas of one can become a painting of colour. From the first sip, the @duntrooncyderhouse Empire Extra Dry cyder had us in its grip. In fact, when it was released back in 2021, it had a chokehold on the entire Ontario cider community. With no added sugar, it’s an extra dry cider as the name suggests, but it leans a bit on some natural sugars. The empires make this an extra, extra crisp experience, providing for immense refreshment every sip. It’s so bright and clean, without a fault to be found. Some pleasant acidity, tartness and tannin rounds out this experience for one of depth and tons of apple characteristics. It’s incredible how much they derived from just one variety. This cider really opened our eyes to the complexity and appeal of single varietal ciders. One may assume they are static and limited to only a key characteristic or two. But this explosion of crispness and layers, is a spectacular expression of many flavour and body notes. This cider has stayed with us since, being a prime example of what defines and makes Ontario ciders so great. That’s why it’s in our top 5 of the last 10 years.

Our next pick for one of our top 5 best and most i Our next pick for one of our top 5 best and most influential ciders these last 10 years probably needs no introduction. I am certain most of our followers have tried this cider and love it just as much. The @westavenuecider Cherriosity is a key Ontario cider for many reasons. I remember first trying this cider a cold night in Toronto at @bar_volo back maybe 9 years ago now. It was half price bottle day and it came in a beautiful bottle. I had not yet tried a West Avenue cider, but they had quite a few to choose from. And it was like nothing I’ve ever tried before. It’s dry, but still bright. A bit funky and cellared tasting but yet clean and vivid. Both apple and cherry simultaneously exploding with flavour but also balanced and in harmony with one another. Its brilliance also lies partially in how well they use local ingredients. Old world apples from their orchard. Cherries from the nearby Niagara region that grows them so pristinely. They have a motto to keep things as local as possible, and it shows in this cider. It’s delicious. It’s memorable. And it’s been around for so many years now, never wavering in quality. It might even be one of the first commercially available cherry ciders in Ontario. West Avenue defines what tradition meets innovation means. They stay true to their values, but also they explore all the possibilities their land offers. West Avenue is a pinnacle Ontario cidery for many well deserved reasons. In honour of 1000 reviews at thecidercrate.com and In honour of 1000 reviews at thecidercrate.com and the website being almost 10 years old, we decided to pick our top 5 Ontario ciders that have stood out above the rest for their excellent taste, quality and the influence they have had on not only us in growing as cider fans, but also being positively impactful to the Ontario Craft Cider industry as well. These ciders have stood the test of time and have such a lasting meaning and importance. It should be absolutely no surprise that @countycider A Tortured Path is on this list. This cider means an incredible amount to us and to so many others. County Cider was the first cidery we visited when we started touring in 2016. We met Grant Howes and Jen Dean who gave us a wonderful tour and interview, and they treated us with great respect despite us knowing so little about cider at this point. This interview with Grant was actually one of the last he did before he passed in 2017, so hearing the voice of the Grandfather of Cider in Ontario can still ring clear today. A Tortured Path is certifiably one of the first ciders in Ontario to use grafted UK cider apples, and it was inspired by traditional Somerset ciders. It’s a wonderfully complex blend of apples that’s super crisp, tannic and with a gripping but still balanced acidity. It’s an education on hundreds of years of traditional cider making in a bottle. With County being the first cider maker in Ontario, they have helped support so many other cidermakers over the years, making them true legends in the industry. A Tortured Path was also Grant’s “baby” as so many will fondly remember. Every time we have a pint of A Tortured Path at County Cider, it’s nostalgic, transformative and yet still so comforting. It lead the way for so many Ontario cidermakers to follow suit and also draw inspiration from traditional production areas in Europe, here in the province. In short, it’s iconic and it has remained so after all these years. Whenever we are in the Niagara region, we make sur Whenever we are in the Niagara region, we make sure to support the good students at the @nctwinery by buying their latest crafted ciders. And guess what friends - they are good! They are on par with experienced cidermakers! And even one year, their Dr. Pepper inspired cider was our top cider of the year. On our latest trip, we picked up 2 from their new series - their Taylor Road Ciders named after the road the college is on. Here we have their Cherry Cider. It’s a natural choice to celebrate a prime agricultural resource for the region. Now this one is carbonated!! It was a bit lively when it opened, so do so with care. This is a heavily sparkling offering - it could be a very good substitute for sparkling wines or other sparkling ciders. What is unique is the cherry fruit infusion - typically they are straight apple from what we’ve seen. Now it’s a light touch but it adds a dry and tart layer within. The carbonation is very effervescent and it overtakes the palate for a lot of the journey - both mouthfeel and the tonic-like notes from it. You only really distinguish the cherries and sharp apples in the finish, once the bubbles have reduced. It ends on a semi-crisp apple that stays whole. Tell people you went to Paris but don’t necessar Tell people you went to Paris but don’t necessarily tell them which Paris… keep ‘em guessing! Back this Fall, we travelled from London (Ontario) to Paris (Ontario) in a single day, and our last stop was to the @parisbeerco. Among their very tasty and unique beers, is their Farmed & Brewed Dry-Hopped Cider. Made with all local ingredients - including a raw wildflower honey - this is a very bright and fun cider, that we think many cider and beers fans would all like. It’s a very tropical experience, we got a lot of starfruit notes within and only a touch of bitterness to be found. Apples are semi-crisp and have a bit of a funkiness to them also. Inspired by the retsina wines of Greece, @revelcid Inspired by the retsina wines of Greece, @revelcider brings forth an inspired cider choice in their Wax On. 🇬🇷 Made with locally foraged spruce and local beeswax, this 6.5% cider is aged for 6 months in specially-coated barrels. Upfront, you get a quick herby punch to the senses but as the cider goes on, the spruce becomes more defined and it lingers awhile - it even stays on the breath for exhales. The apples start out sour and funky, but become brighter and more balanced towards the finish. The beeswax comes off as a bit earthy and it adds body, but it well compliments the other elements within. We can always count on 3 things from Revel - quality, creativity and their small batch bottles to sell out very quickly! I sure do and I did with this beautiful bottle of Maple Pommeau from @lochmorciderco for my birthday today! 17%, this pommeau does not mess around, abv or flavoure wise. Barrel-aged, it’s a fortified offering that mixes apple juice and apple brandy. Well know for their original Pommeau (hello multiple award winner), in years since, they created a few different spinoffs, including this maple infused choice. This one is a silent killer, it tastes boozy but not 17% boozy. Right from the start, you get a sweet, caramelized base and the delightful maple notes. It becomes more maple in the finish, staying and lingering on it. It’s basically liquid maple candies in booze form if you ask us. Pommeaus and typically all fortified ciders age well, so it’s a great choice to save for an opportune moment. Typically, this comes out every year around March for Maple Fest in Prince Edward County where lots of cideries, wineries and other businesses open with maple-focused offerings. So maybe we can expect another release in 2 months? If only the age I was turning today was closer to 17, than what I actually am turning today, [redacted]. Some of the best Canadian ciders you could find in Chicago last week: 🍎 @banjocider. The strawberry rhubarb Wildflower made with maple syrup was an absolute hit with everyone 🍎 @twoblokescider all of theirs of course! 🍎 @woodfolkcider brought many of their ciders, Little Twig being a personal favourite of mine 🍎 @redislandcider brought some of their flavoured cans. Their Haskap Lady’s Slipper was a masterclass on local PEI flavours 🍎 @islandfolkcider brought a few, including their latest Chocolate Strawberry made for Valentines 🍎 @crossmountcidercompany brought maybe their entire portfolio to sample?! Amazing! 🍎 @yorkcountycider from Fredericton became a cult favourite with their 2L bottles of flavoured goodness, including their 9% imperial cherry 🍎 other bottles from @greyandgoldcider, @heemanscellar and @drinkannapolis also made their way through the tasting events Always incredible to see Canadian Cider from coast to coast to coast be loved and appreciated. This cider and this maker means a lot to us here at The Cider Crate and the impact they have had on us has been truly transformational to our page and love of Ontario cider. Cold Creek opened their doors in the early days of the pandemic, summer of 2020. Right from the start, we knew they would be different. And oh were we right on that one. Their first cider, the Cuvée Madeline, was an unparalleled beauty in the province and a stunning primary offering on its own. The inspiration for cuvée draws on Irish and Brittany, France cider making traditions and it shows. You get a lively carbonation that is quite effervescent to the palate. Quickly you get a complex, layered caramelized and baked apple base that is a rich experience for the senses. A driving acidity and semi-gripping tannins add mouthfeel. Some natural sugars tease and brighten the tastebuds. You can taste the barreling room their ciders are aged in, with balanced cellaring notes within. The 2019 Cuvée Madeline was their first vintage, but not their last - it has made a repeat appearance every year since. While every year has its unique characteristics, the essence and body of this cider remains consistent. Drawing from rudimentary practices and a nostalgia for old world cider making, they also fuse the modern spirit of Prince Edward County into their craft. This is one of the most sophisticated and romantic ciders we’ve encountered in Ontario. And owners Chris and Sylvia are some of the most welcoming people you will ever meet - you become apart of their story once you walk through their tasting room doors. This cider really upped what good and traditionally-based cider making can be in Ontario for us. And every other cider style they’ve crafted since, you can see the quality and homage to other old world cider making styles in them too. The Cuvée Madeline changed the narrative for us. The Spirit of the Woods by @revelcider has a special place in my history of cider, not just because its from my hometown of Guelph, Ontario, but also it was the first offering to make me really say “wow that’s unique”. Tariq, the founder and owner of Revel Cider setup shop in Guelph in 2016, and was one of the first places we took a tour of. Seeing his space grow from a plan to a power house of a producer, to now adding in a gorgeous taproom to showcase their product has been fantastic and quite the ride. That product has found itself all over the world, as he has create a cult following of types. You can see a few of our tours with photo’s and interviews on our www.thecidercrate.com account and podcast. Spirit of the Woods was one of the first in the 100+ offerings that we have sampled, and remains at the top of my personal list because of its one of a kind unique sensation found from the gin - a bountiful flavour of botanicals and deep and intense apple base. It almost feels like it is chilled, even at room temperature. This is often the “go to” when asked what my favourite cider is, which of course, like pets it’s hard to choose. This cider was everywhere for a few years and it really broke some barriers in Ontario on how experimental you can be with cider as your base. It won tons of awards. It was one of the ciders to really break through to many bars and lead the charge for the cider revolution from 2015 on in Ontario. We don’t think Revel has released this one in a few years now, seeing we last had it in 2021, but consider this post our petition to bring it back. Sometimes you only need one apple variety to make Sometimes you only need one apple variety to make a masterpiece. The simple can become complex. A canvas of one can become a painting of colour. From the first sip, the @duntrooncyderhouse Empire Extra Dry cyder had us in its grip. In fact, when it was released back in 2021, it had a chokehold on the entire Ontario cider community. With no added sugar, it’s an extra dry cider as the name suggests, but it leans a bit on some natural sugars. The empires make this an extra, extra crisp experience, providing for immense refreshment every sip. It’s so bright and clean, without a fault to be found. Some pleasant acidity, tartness and tannin rounds out this experience for one of depth and tons of apple characteristics. It’s incredible how much they derived from just one variety. This cider really opened our eyes to the complexity and appeal of single varietal ciders. One may assume they are static and limited to only a key characteristic or two. But this explosion of crispness and layers, is a spectacular expression of many flavour and body notes. This cider has stayed with us since, being a prime example of what defines and makes Ontario ciders so great. That’s why it’s in our top 5 of the last 10 years.

I am certain most of our followers have tried this cider and love it just as much. The @westavenuecider Cherriosity is a key Ontario cider for many reasons. I remember first trying this cider a cold night in Toronto at @bar_volo back maybe 9 years ago now. It was half price bottle day and it came in a beautiful bottle. I had not yet tried a West Avenue cider, but they had quite a few to choose from. And it was like nothing I’ve ever tried before. It’s dry, but still bright. A bit funky and cellared tasting but yet clean and vivid. Both apple and cherry simultaneously exploding with flavour but also balanced and in harmony with one another. Its brilliance also lies partially in how well they use local ingredients. Old world apples from their orchard. Cherries from the nearby Niagara region that grows them so pristinely. They have a motto to keep things as local as possible, and it shows in this cider. It’s delicious. It’s memorable. And it’s been around for so many years now, never wavering in quality. It might even be one of the first commercially available cherry ciders in Ontario. West Avenue defines what tradition meets innovation means. They stay true to their values, but also they explore all the possibilities their land offers. West Avenue is a pinnacle Ontario cidery for many well deserved reasons. In honour of 1000 reviews at thecidercrate.com and In honour of 1000 reviews at thecidercrate.com and the website being almost 10 years old, we decided to pick our top 5 Ontario ciders that have stood out above the rest for their excellent taste, quality and the influence they have had on not only us in growing as cider fans, but also being positively impactful to the Ontario Craft Cider industry as well. These ciders have stood the test of time and have such a lasting meaning and importance. It should be absolutely no surprise that @countycider A Tortured Path is on this list. This cider means an incredible amount to us and to so many others. County Cider was the first cidery we visited when we started touring in 2016. We met Grant Howes and Jen Dean who gave us a wonderful tour and interview, and they treated us with great respect despite us knowing so little about cider at this point. This interview with Grant was actually one of the last he did before he passed in 2017, so hearing the voice of the Grandfather of Cider in Ontario can still ring clear today. A Tortured Path is certifiably one of the first ciders in Ontario to use grafted UK cider apples, and it was inspired by traditional Somerset ciders. It’s a wonderfully complex blend of apples that’s super crisp, tannic and with a gripping but still balanced acidity. It’s an education on hundreds of years of traditional cider making in a bottle. With County being the first cider maker in Ontario, they have helped support so many other cidermakers over the years, making them true legends in the industry. A Tortured Path was also Grant’s “baby” as so many will fondly remember. Every time we have a pint of A Tortured Path at County Cider, it’s nostalgic, transformative and yet still so comforting. It lead the way for so many Ontario cidermakers to follow suit and also draw inspiration from traditional production areas in Europe, here in the province. In short, it’s iconic and it has remained so after all these years. Whenever we are in the Niagara region, we make sur Whenever we are in the Niagara region, we make sure to support the good students at the @nctwinery by buying their latest crafted ciders. And guess what friends - they are good! They are on par with experienced cidermakers! And even one year, their Dr. Pepper inspired cider was our top cider of the year. On our latest trip, we picked up 2 from their new series - their Taylor Road Ciders named after the road the college is on. Here we have their Cherry Cider. It’s a natural choice to celebrate a prime agricultural resource for the region. Now this one is carbonated!! It was a bit lively when it opened, so do so with care. This is a heavily sparkling offering - it could be a very good substitute for sparkling wines or other sparkling ciders. What is unique is the cherry fruit infusion - typically they are straight apple from what we’ve seen. Now it’s a light touch but it adds a dry and tart layer within. The carbonation is very effervescent and it overtakes the palate for a lot of the journey - both mouthfeel and the tonic-like notes from it. You only really distinguish the cherries and sharp apples in the finish, once the bubbles have reduced. It ends on a semi-crisp apple that stays whole. Back this Fall, we travelled from London (Ontario) to Paris (Ontario) in a single day, and our last stop was to the @parisbeerco. Among their very tasty and unique beers, is their Farmed & Brewed Dry-Hopped Cider. Made with all local ingredients - including a raw wildflower honey - this is a very bright and fun cider, that we think many cider and beers fans would all like. It’s a very tropical experience, we got a lot of starfruit notes within and only a touch of bitterness to be found. Apples are semi-crisp and have a bit of a funkiness to them also. The honey is a light presence but it seems to make the cider more uplifting overall. A great spot with excellent food and vibes. A trip worthy of your next Southern Ontario road trip! Inspired by the retsina wines of Greece, @revelcid Inspired by the retsina wines of Greece, @revelcider brings forth an inspired cider choice in their Wax On. 🇬🇷 Made with locally foraged spruce and local beeswax, this 6.5% cider is aged for 6 months in specially-coated barrels. Upfront, you get a quick herby punch to the senses but as the cider goes on, the spruce becomes more defined and it lingers awhile - it even stays on the breath for exhales. The apples start out sour and funky, but become brighter and more balanced towards the finish. The beeswax comes off as a bit earthy and it adds body, but it well compliments the other elements within. We can always count on 3 things from Revel - quality, creativity and their small batch bottles to sell out very quickly! I sure do and I did with this beautiful bottle of Maple Pommeau from @lochmorciderco for my birthday today! 17%, this pommeau does not mess around, abv or flavoure wise. Barrel-aged, it’s a fortified offering that mixes apple juice and apple brandy. Well know for their original Pommeau (hello multiple award winner), in years since, they created a few different spinoffs, including this maple infused choice. This one is a silent killer, it tastes boozy but not 17% boozy. Right from the start, you get a sweet, caramelized base and the delightful maple notes. It becomes more maple in the finish, staying and lingering on it. It’s basically liquid maple candies in booze form if you ask us. Pommeaus and typically all fortified ciders age well, so it’s a great choice to save for an opportune moment. Typically, this comes out every year around March for Maple Fest in Prince Edward County where lots of cideries, wineries and other businesses open with maple-focused offerings. So maybe we can expect another release in 2 months? If only the age I was turning today was closer to 17, than what I actually am turning today, [redacted]. Gently infused raspberry on their crisp apple base, makes for a delightful and effervescent experience overall. Elevated but still approachable. Really, good for many settings, including dessert pairings. The whole lineup Hounds of Erie ciders and wines are fabulous.
