Bethany - Certified Cider Guide + BJCP Judge 🍎🥂

It was very clear from the first pour, this cider It was very clear from the first pour, this cider was going to be special. And it ended up well exceeding our expectations.

Hailing from Regina, Saskatchewan, @pileobonesbrews now has their own cider lineup, @ramblinnan_ciderco.

Here we have their Haskap Cider. By the colour alone, you can tell they did not skimp on the berries. And boy, this shows in the cider. Tart, rich, dark haskap berry notes dedicate themselves to you from start to finish. But fear not, you still get a lot of crisp apple as well… including what we interpreted as a Granny Smith note. The apples hail from BC but we believe the haskaps are local. While it tilts more haskap, we think it tastes about a 60/40% balance between the two fruits within.

And according to their website, they are a verified Métis business in Saskatchewan. They also detail how they incorporate their history and culture into the core of their business name and operations. It’s a great read and a great mission!

They also have a sour cherry cider we have a can of yet to try and a original apple. What fun. What a great introduction to this new cider for us ❤️😊

Woke up to some great news today - I have passed m Woke up to some great news today - I have passed my two required exams and am now a certified BJCP @bjcp_official Cider Judge 🎉🥂

Having passed the written exam in September, I advanced to the tasting exam in Calgary post judging the @canadabeercup in October. And I got the news today I successfully passed the 6 cider tasting exam!

What a wonderful honour to be in great company of the approximately 20 accredited cider judges in Canada now and just over 300 worldwide. It’s a fantastic program that really changes your perspectives on the cider industry and deepens your evaluations and palate. I would recommend this program to the all the cider curious and experts ❤️

I was definitely nervous to share I was studying for this exam, in fear of jinxing myself and not being ultimately successful. Maybe I’m superstitious 🤷🏻‍♀️ but now I am relieved and proud of the work to get here today.

Congrats to my fellow 6 judges who also achieved this milestone with me, including the lovely Lauren @beergirlca and my husband and ED for @cidercidreca Barry Rooke.

I have some more exciting personal news to share in the coming days also! Stay tuned ✨

It doesn’t have to be a full moon to enjoy one of It doesn’t have to be a full moon to enjoy one of British Columbia’s finest ciders, @ravensmooncraftcider 🌙🌕

Tonight we are enjoying their Crabby Pants 100% hyslop cider. This one is really going to test your tolerance for tannins - the gripping, astringency is no joke. But if you like it gritty, this has your name all over it.

From start to finish, the chalky, drying tannins will captive your tastebuds and palate… they really do a long dance in the mouth. Along with these however, is a full bodied, extra crisp apple that really cranks up the flavour notes in many ways. Tart, acidic, with a variety of apple characteristics, along with grass, bubblegum and pear, really round out this experience for something unique and bold.

And for the lady, perhaps a pastry and a cider ins And for the lady, perhaps a pastry and a cider inspired by it?

~yes, please 🙋🏻‍♀️~

If you’ve ever been to @brantviewapples, you know they do two things well - @howellroadciderco and their Apple cider donuts made in house. 🍩

Now these worlds have collided into a fantastic cinnamon- forward Apple Cider Donut Cider. Smooth, but a bit spicy from the cinnamon and nutmeg, overall, very sessionable, and very satisfying. It’s the perfect warming cider for these cooler months.

I’m surprised we’d haven’t seen more ciders inspired by these donuts, it’s a very popular flavour in the states. But happy it came up here finally and it’s done by the fine folks at Brantview 🫡

Just us over here, missing the red sands of Prince Just us over here, missing the red sands of Prince Edward Island ‼️

We’ve always loved @redislandcider, but having a can of their OG Father Walker’s Dry Cider on some red sand, in PEI, really connected some dots on why they named themselves the way they did. It’s nothing short of spectacular.

A beautiful crisp, acidic cider that runs mostly dry, but bright and very flavourful overall. It’s a bit tingly on the tongue, and it’s loaded with tons of different apple notes.

We are drinking our last can of this definitely not in a beautiful setting currently. This one is really a laid back cider, just like the entire island. The people, the scenery. Take us back 😩

Swipe for red sands and beaches for your next travel inspo ✨

Today on Cider Street, the letter of the day is “B Today on Cider Street, the letter of the day is “B” for Bulmer’s Norman!

As part of of their English Cider Apple Series, @westavenuecider is bringing the goods with this Bulmer’s Norman offering.

This is an extra dry cider delivering on the tannic goodness of this bittersweet varietal to its full shining potential here. You get some acidity, some funk and some sourness to contrast with yet also compliment some of the brighter, caramelized apple aspects.

This has been a delightful series that West Avenue has put forth, using some really serious and hard to find cider apples, that includes other varietals like Chisel Jerseys, Yarlington Mill and Kingston Blacks, only to name a few ❤️

If you are a fan of full-bodied, lively and crisp If you are a fan of full-bodied, lively and crisp apple-forward ciders, then the Aurore by @closshanouk is a true stunner.

We had the pleasure to visit their estate back with @cidreduquebec in November on Île d’Orléans - an island 20 minutes from downtown Quebec City that is prime apple orchard territory, with many thriving cideries as a result.

Owner Daniel gave us a wonderful tour and tasting, as well as showing us his expertise in disgorging bottles. All ciders were amazing but the Aurore really spoke to me.

Bright juicy apples greet you, with a bit of peel that brings with it some acidity and a touch of tannins. Golden Russet and Empire all over this one.  It lingers a while and becomes more peel-like in the aftertaste.  Quite clean, a bit of sweetness and a lot of carbonation in this Pet-nat style offering.

Clos Shanouk is one up and coming legendary, elevated marker that currently is only available in select bottle shops in Quebec, but a wider distribution is expected soon.

And bonus points for Daniel - he names the ciders after the special women in his life, like a true gentleman 🙌

Well our cider saw its shadow today, so this bottl Well our cider saw its shadow today, so this bottle may last a total of 6 more minutes it’s so good!

It’s our first time trying La Petite-Nation producer @les_pommes_perdues, found on the western side of Quebec. This is their 2024 Cidre Pommes D’Été

Made with summer apples, this is a wild ferment with no added sulfites. While it tastes funky indeed, it’s a very controlled funk and fermentation, almost “clean” in a sense, with no detectable off notes. Semi-crisp, a tantalizing acidity rounds out the experience well.

While we aren’t sure what this blend of wild ferments includes, we for sure get some tannins and bittersweet notes ❣️

Don’t believe they have a taproom you can visit currently - if and when they do, we are a 75 minute drive away! However, you can find this and others from them in better bottle shops in the province 💙🤍

Another trip around the disco ball - or sun, whate Another trip around the disco ball - or sun, whatever is more groovy! 🪩

For my birthday today, I am revisiting an all time favourite - my 2024 cider of the year, Abbotts Corner by @domaine_heritage. And trust, it still hits all the spots. Rich, layered, caramelized apples with a boozy ice cider barreling that is tannic, extra crisp and oh so delightful.

With another year under the belt, the past few months have been of deep reflection, growth and change. I’ve been more involved with my family and my work. I’ve also considered the role of social media, the good and the bad. And don’t even get me started on world events 👀.

It’s all been weighing heavy. The loss of a treasured family member. The growing role I’ve taken at work. The disillusionment of some social media influences on society. It’s made me pause and think about what’s important and what kind of content I want to do.

So in this new year, I will be more intentional with posts. Featuring quality over quantity. Supporting the smaller over the larger. Showcasing authenticity as much as I can.

So cheers to another year and to getting back into regular postings. The good people of the cider world always inspire me to continue forward ❤️

Happy Halloween from The Cider Crate! 🎃👻 Nothing Happy Halloween from The Cider Crate! 🎃👻

Nothing spooky about how good this cider tastes! Barreled aged and with a bit of pumpkin spice, this is the ultimate Halloween cider, that is all treat, no tricks.

Our friends at @coldcreekvineyards always knock it out of the park/graveyard with their releases, and this one is no different. Boozy at 10.6% ‼️ but balanced and smooth tasting still. The rich crisp apple base is oh so satisfying.

Their last day open for the season is tomorrow so last chance until 2026 to grab their goods!

One perry that will forever have a hold on our hea One perry that will forever have a hold on our hearts is the @twinpinesorchards Hammer Bent Perry 🍐💚

This is a very pear-forward, true to the fruit perry. Bright and juicy pears welcome you quickly and become more sharp as they go along. It’s off-dry but naturally sweet from the fruit. Smooth to consume and one of the more natural and authentic pear-tasting perries we’ve ever had, as well as the most crisp and clean of them all.

1L is a perfect size to split for 2-4 people (or one if you’re adventurous as it’s not hard to want a second pint, trust us 👀).

Then again, Twin Pines never disappoints us. One of our picks for some of the most traditional and authentic cidermakers you’ll have in Ontario - every offering is a knockout, and made with such a dedication and care.

She’s a (pink) lady 💝💁🏻‍♀️ Here we have the very She’s a (pink) lady 💝💁🏻‍♀️

Here we have the very unique Pink Lady single varietal by @caroliniaciderco. When we say there is a lot going on in this cider made with only one type of apples, we mean it 💖

It starts off tart and acidic, actually leading into a fresh, fleshy pineapple-like taste after a bolder carbonation presence makes itself known to your senses. Savoury floral and bitterness are unexpected flavours/aspects here too. While there are some earthy apple notes upfront, they don’t really define until the aftertaste.

The pineapple morphs into a general tropical flavour as it goes along, with the apple peel grit of the Pink Lady coming through at the end.

This cider lingers awhile, including some bitterness in the throat. It’s a very sensory cider from the variety of flavour notes that seems to touch on almost all tasting map regions of the tongue (like bitterness, sourness and sweetness), carbonic bite from the bubbles that can go up in the senses/nose and unique aromas.

A lot going on but don’t let that stop you from trying one of the most extraordinary ciders we’ve had this year. Pink Lady apples are one of the last harvested apple varieties each season, and we think that makes it develop into the many special and unique flavour expressions you can find in this cider!

The time has finally come - @1818farm_cidery has o The time has finally come - @1818farm_cidery has opened their doors this weekend to their estate taproom and restaurant in Carp, Ontario ✨

As a part of a media preview on Wednesday, we and others got to sample all the amazing things 1818 Farm & Cidery now has available for you to try.

We’ve been big fans of their cider since they started selling locally at Ottawa-area farmers markets last year. But seeing all they have to offer at their estate - wow. The Ottawa-scene definitely is getting a glow up and an elevation from their spot being on the map!

The beautiful evening was filled with samplers of their many ciders, and their food. They try to grow as much as they can on their farm, and keep everything as locally sourced as possible. The result? The food tastes super fresh and bright. Starting off with their bruschetta that had some russets in it, paired with their golden russet brandy barrel-aged cider, “Golden Hour”, we knew the night was going to be amazing. We later moved on to some of their estate grown salads and vegetables, then later into their amazing pizzas and pizza farm pockets. Everything was incredibly tasty, and since they are trying to make things as seasonal and as local as possible, the menu will be changing about every 2 weeks to match this. So you’ll always have a new experience every visit!

And of course, the ciders. We got to try their newest bottled release, Last Call Volume 3, this version featuring hibiscus and rose hips. We also got to sample their Pear Pressure tequila aged cider, that’s 75% apple, 25% pear. And it may be my new favourite from them - boozy, fruity and fun. It’s only on tap now, soon to be in bottles too.

The estate and farm is large, with their main building being crafted from a reclaimed post office. It’s spacious, modern and welcoming. You can buy their produce and ciders on the way out too!

Such a wonderful evening and a great cider destination, worth the trip to Ottawa alone for. We cannot wait to see all the magical eats and drinks to come from these lovely people ❤️❤️

It’s always a delight to have a bottle or two from It’s always a delight to have a bottle or two from the Danforth Road collection from @lochmorciderco ✨

In their series that has largely been single varietals made with some serious cider apples, here we have their The Danforth Rd Blend - made with bittersharps and bittersweet’s , undetermined what the composure is.

Right off the top, you get a sharp acidity and some tannins, that aren’t too gripping but do alert you to the elevated cidermaking within. It’s a dry cider, but it’s very bright and crisp, and it has a hint of natural sweetness to it. We think it leans more bittersharp, but we do get some of the bittersweet’s in the finish, in particular. We also get undertones of vanilla and wood/oak - it says on the label it is partially barrel aged.

It’s pulpy, fleshy and a medley of so many apple characteristics, if you like extra crisp ciders that are somehow both refreshing and make you salvate for more in one sip, this will scratch your itch.

One of our favourite cider makers you should not b One of our favourite cider makers you should not be sleeping on are the good folks at @kawarthacountrywines ❤️ Nestled in the heart of the Kawarthas, this rustic country-side establishment is one of the best rural cider stops in all of Ontario!

They are both a cidery and a fruit winery, and the selection is just bonkers. Upwards of 50 different styles of products available at any given time, you won’t get bored here, trust us. We love their fruit wines (the small selection we’ve actually been able to try, again, so many styles) but of course, we come for the cider, always.

Named after their region, their Kawartha Cider is a super crisp and bright pulpy apple cider. Off dry, it’s got the perfect amount of sweetness in my opinion, far from sugary, but enough to add a great mouthfeel and vibrancy to it. The apples within taste fresh also - one could confuse this with a non-fermented cider at times they are so crisp and juicy. We also got some vanilla and Asian pear like notes within. So unique.

Super easy to drink, is smooth, creamy and really, one rare cider that I think would appeal to almost every cider fan.

We revisited their spot this summer, and it was absolutely packed for music and pizzas, beyond the drinks. You can tell that the locals really appreciate the authenticity and value this place provides to the community.

We also sampled their Buckhorn cider (also named for their local circumstances - the town they are in) and their Candied Pear which wow, you’ll never have a perry like this. All clean, bright, and easy going ciders that you can knock back a few pints, no problem.

Really, we are big fans of Kawartha County Wines and the people who run it are just the sweetest people you’ll meet also.

Worth a trip while in cottage country, or also on its own, only about 30 minutes north of Peterborough!

We’re here for a good time, not a long time. Well We’re here for a good time, not a long time. Well that’s how we justified how quickly we drank this stunner!

As you can tell the @shaleridgeestatewinery Purple Rain is unlike most ciders out there. Made with purple butterfly pea flower, it tastes as dreamy as it looks. With peach, chamomile and lavender, one might fall asleep to these calming ingredients, but it’s so creamy and bright, it’s actually quite energizing to taste and look at 💜🦄

We recently revisited Shale Ridge and it has come along way since our first visit in 2020 when they were still building their main tasting and production space. Such a beautiful estate with lots of seating outside and inside - including their famous swing seat tables!

And they aren’t even done - their Nordic spa and hotel space are currently under construction to be opening in the near future we are told. That’s definitely a first for Ontario cideries!

While there, we had probably the best charcuterie board we’ve ever had, loaded with rich cheeses and soft, pillowy bread. I still crave this frequently. And we got a flight of their ciders, which are all fun and easy going choices. They also have lovely wines, including a froze - frozen rosé wine - that was a delight. Other food and non-alcoholic options too!

This is most definitely a great destination in Western Ontario we recommend you visit. And get the Purple Rain - trust us 🥰
