This single varietal by @sagebirdciderworks features the little known (for us Canadians) Black Twig. A bit smoother than many other single varieties, it's still very dry with a semi-strong bitter sharp base. Slightly tannic that becomes a bit more peel focused in a long lingering aftertaste. Lovely heirloom apples, it has a hint of earth in the finish.Very nice taproom and chat with the staff.

Made with varieties of apples that have been cultivated locally in Southwest Ontario for over 100 years now - hence the name Century Hard Cider - this one by @heemans is certainly worth a try.Inside this bottle you will find Golden Delicious, Snow Tolman Sweet and Rhode Island Greening apples - all varieties found in North America. It features traditionally ‘sweet’ low acid and low tannins apples, but it’s not too sweet overall.Definitely a unique one that intrigues the senses. And we love its purpose, of educating of local varieties and their history!.

We are officially closer to June than December, but yet it looks like the dang holiday season outside! I guess we should always remember we always get 2nd and 3rd winter before Spring actually arrives…And although it may be April, we can enjoy this June Dry Cider by @johnstons_cranberries. At 10% (‼️) it won’t take you long before you feel warm again. Dry, sharp apples with a forward acidity, really define this beautiful cider. A good level of tannins that enhance and not distract, from the medley of other apple notes within. It’s a great sipper, anytime of the year..

We just drank our 5/5 @daughterscider we got last fall and we have to say - wow, do not sleep on this cider maker ‼️You can find them at Footstep Organics, north of Price Edward County and the 401 in Wooler, and this is an excellent stop on your next journey in the area.We particularly liked this Wild Pair perry. A muddled, juicy pear that has a mild touch of natural sweetness, it somehow tastes both so fresh and also with a satisfying fermented base.Can’t wait to see what they come with next. A true gem in the area that just adds to why the region is so prime and creating a new standard for ciders and perries in Ontario..

Have you ever had an amphora-aged cider or perry? It’s an ancient technique of aging wines in clay vessels that traces back to thousand of years ago. It’s a long lost technique that has seen a revival for the modern times, and that includes cidermakers adapting it to their craft as well. The inside of these terracotta clay pots are very porous, adding a lot of unique characteristics to the liquids within.Here we have the Breccia Perry by @revelcider. If you’ve ever been to their taproom in Guelph, you will have probably seen two massive clay structures at the end of the warehouse. This is their first offering aged in these, a perry, with only 48 cases produced of this.There are a lot of unique notes in this. The pears are most dry, but with a bit of residual sweetness as pears have unfermentable sugars. It starts off dank, funky and sour, becoming warmer as it goes along. It almost becomes a toasted caramelized note by the finish - possibly from the clay. You also get a decent amount of minerality, saline and herby-like notes in this - presumably also from the clay.We can’t wait to see what else Revel ages in these beauties..

Here we have the Kerr cider, made with estate grown apples.Featuring creamy apples, it’s very dry and with a bit of earthy and fermentation notes. Flesh-heavy but with peel and some tannins. Sharper acidity helps guide the flavours. Has unique honeydew and saison/pepper-like notes. It was a fantastic day at @farmgatecider for their annual Wassail celebrations - in hopes to ward off the bad spirits of the orchard and therefore have a fruitful harvest this year.There was lots of pot banging, chants and hot mulled cider. We hung cider-soaked bread on the trees and we came together in hopes for another year of great cider for Farmgate.
